School Playgrounds: Schirle Elementary

I love the playground at Schirle Elementary School. I have a special attachment to it because I went to Schirle. It seems like a hundred years ago, but I did! My name’s on a little ceramic leaf on the big ceramic tree on the entryway floor. I have so many great memories from this place.

It’s truly amazing to watch my children running and playing on the same turf that I did growing up. Most of the old structures have been replaced, except for some of the ancient bars (where I learned to do cherry drops and waterfalls) and an incredibly awesome old school metal slide (that my friends and I used to play escape-the-hot-lava on.)

It seems like so long ago, but also just like yesterday.

Nowadays the playground is still pretty cool. There’s your standard bridged climbing structure fully equipped with a long curly slide as well as a short one for little kids. There’s one of those big roped spiderweb climbing structures and a lot of other things to hang from and climb around on. The main play area sits on top of a hill and there’s a nice long track that circles around it and the field below.

My kids love the big slide. I can’t believe that it’s still there. I seriously hope that it’s never torn down!

Another great thing about this playground is all of the space. There is just so much room to roam and run. So many spots to lay and relax, contemplate life or just gaze at the sky for a little bit…

Maybe it’s just me, maybe I’m just flooded with nostalgia being somewhere so precious to me that was such a big part of my childhood. But I don’t think so. Honestly it’s just a really great playground!

If you’ve never been, you really should check it out!
