Day Trip: The Science Factory Children’s Museum and Exploration Dome

By Emy Sloan

The Science Factory Children’s Museum and Exploration Dome is a fabulous place to take your little scientist for some great hands-on learning! Located in Alton Baker Park in Eugene, Oregon, the Science Factory consists of a large interactive exhibit hall, a ‘tot spot’ play area and a Planetarium!

We were in Eugene recently so we decided to go check it out!

The museum is just a short walk from the parking lot down a beautiful tree- lined path. We were lucky enough to see some ducks swimming and splashing around in a nearby pond on our way! The kids thought it was the coolest thing. Speaking of ducks- this museum is not only in the middle of a gorgeous park, it’s right directly across from Autzen Stadium!! (In case you’re not familiar with football, Autzen is the home field of the Oregon Ducks!) And an impressive stadium it is! Quite a sight to see.

The outside of the Science Factory is brightly colored and super inviting! Our kids must have thought it was pretty awesome because they broke out in a sprint towards it as soon as it came into view!

As we were looking at admission prices I thought that it couldn’t hurt to mention that we were A.C. Gilbert’s Discovery Children’s Museum members. Sure enough we were able to enter the museum FREE because of our membership! (After showing our card and ID of course.) What an awesome surprise!! For more information about the Gilbert House, including our personal experience, check out the following link:

We were there too late in the day to check out the planetarium (Exploration Dome) which was kind of a bummer, but the kids were completely oblivious to that. Their sole focus was to get into that exhibit hall and check out everything that was going on in there!

(The Exploration Dome shows cost extra regardless of membership.)

There was so much going on! The kids dove right in! They were able to experiment with digitized sound, motion and movement, electricity, magnets, lights and so much more. There were blocks, puzzles, spiral tubes, balls, trains…the list goes on.

Most of these interactive exhibits are changed on a regular basis so there’s always something new each time you visit!

Finally, there’s a play area for younger kids called the ‘tot spot.’ Currently it’s ocean themed with a boat structure to climb on as well as different puzzles and toys to keep those tiny explorers busy!

We had a great time here!
